President Hu calls for strengthened swine flu prevention

Chinese President Hu Jintao has ordered the country to step up inspection and quarantine measures, to prevent swine flu from entering China.

Hu urged local party and government departments, to stick to the people-first policy, closely monitor the global swine flu situation, and take prompt and comprehensive measures to deal with the virus.

Premier Wen Jiabao, has also called for enhanced swine flu prevention in China during a meeting of the State Council.

Chinese president sends consolatory message to Mexican leader over swine flu threat

President Hu Jintao has sent condolences to his Mexican counterpart Felipe Calderon, expressing sympathy for the death of more than 150 people in the swine flu outbreak.

He said China is willing to strengthen cooperation with Mexico in addressing the challenges posed by the deadly influenza virus.

Swine flu crisis deepens

Meanwhile, the swine flu crisis continues to spread worldwide.

At least 16 countries have confirmed or suspected infections.

This comes, as the World Health Organization admits the virus is too widespread to be contained.

It has raised its global alert level, but stopped short of declaring a full-blown pandemic.

There are 64 confirmed cases in the United States and eight cases in Canada.

The US is reacting as if the swine flu outbreak is already a full pandemic.

Countries in Asia and the Middle East are the latest to confirm virus-related cases.

Oil prices have dropped amid worries, the outbreak would hurt air travel, and hit demand.

Changing the name of swine flu

Senior officials in the United States are considering changing the name of "swine flu" to remove misunderstanding by pork importers and consumers.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says this is not a food-borne crisis, so it is important not to refer to swine flu. He adds it is also important to convey the message that consuming pork will not cause this illness.

Nine countries have imposed ban on U.S. pork and swine imports amid the swine flu epidemic.

China calls for new development for Sino-French relations

China has called for new initiatives to boost the China-France comprehensive strategic partnership.

The call was made during a meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and former French President Jacques Chirac, who is in Beijing at the invitation of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.

President Hu said the consolidation of ties, especially in the context of the international financial crisis, would help tackle the crisis and be conducive to promoting long-term peace, stability and prosperity.
