On a day that's seen continued bloodshed in Egypt, there's word former President Hosni Mubarak could soon be released from custody. He’s still facing a retrial in the killings of hundreds of protesters during a 2011 uprising. Today’s violence in Egypt took place in the Sinai Peninsula. Security forces say Islamic militants are suspected of fatally shooting 25 off-duty policemen.
 
Some evacuated residents in central Idaho are being allowed to return home. About 2,000 homes remain under mandatory evacuation orders due to the 160-square-mile Beaver Creek fire. The blaze is still under 10% contained. 
 
A volcanic eruption in southwestern Japan has coated a nearby city with a layer of ash. People in Kagoshima city wore masks and raincoats to shield themselves after the Sakurajima volcano erupted. The smoke plume was three miles high and lava flowed about a half mile from the eruption.
 
Cold and hungry as a World War II prisoner, David C. Cox traded his prized gold aviator's ring to a fellow POW for some chocolate bars. Now, after seven decades, it has finally made its way home. The ring arrived last week at the Raleigh, North Carolina, home of his son.
