Besides carrying out docking experiments with the Ttangong-1 prototype space lab, the Shenzhou-8 spacecraft is also set to conduct joint scientific experiments with Germany. The spacecraft carries into space a 34.5kg incubator provided by Germany. It contains 33 types of specimens of microbes, animal cells and plant cells. A total of 17 experiments will be carried out in space. Zhao Liping is an expert in space application from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. "The project includes 10 Chinese experiments, 6 German experiments and one joint experiment. The project is being jointly carried out by seven Chinese institutes and six German universities. Both China and Germany will conduct research on algae, animal cells and plant cells in zero gravity." The cooperation agreement was inked between the China Manned Space Program office and the German Aerospace Center in May 2008.
