When the "psychic" Paul put his tentacles to the test again and selected Spain to win the World Cup semifinal against Germany, many German football fans hoped he would be wrong for once.

But with Germany's defeat by Spain on Wednesday, the famous octopus oracle could now be in trouble for his prediction coming true. Some Germans are calling for a public roasting of Paul.

Paul is a two-year-old octopus from the Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen, a city in western Germany. He earned worldwide fame after selecting the winners in nearly 70 percent of Germany's football matches during the 2008 European Championship.

So far, he correctly has predicted the winners of all six of the team's previous World Cup games, including a shocking defeat by Serbia in the group stages.

Paul's prognosis ahead of Wednesday's World Cup semifinal was broadcast live on German TV. His plumping for Spain caused alarm in the country.

Ralf Teichelmann, who sells octopus dishes in a delicatessen market, warned about killing Paul before the game and already has an idea about what to do with the octopus since his latest prediction has come true.

"It's bad, I would say, but we can give him another chance. If he opts for the wrong team, he will end up here on our table."

After the bitter defeat, German newspapers and websites were filled with suggestions about what to do with Paul. Most of them involved cooking and eating him.

On Friday, Paul will predict the winner of Saturday's Germany-Uruguay match for third place as well as the winner of the Spain-Netherlands final on Sunday.

Broadcast networks in Germany, Spain and the Netherlands are planning live coverage.
