Diary of a Nomad

I like to think I wander with a purpose. I study, I work, I teach, I learn—but most importantly, I want to share. So this program is like a diary, with my personal insight about places I've been and people I've met. See the world from the wide eyes of a small-town girl from the prairie, and enhance your international and cultural vocabulary in the process. I hope you find it interesting, and don't forget to leave feedback!

Nomad: (definition) A person with no fixed residence who roams about; a wanderer.

Two years ago, if you had told me that I would be living in India, covered in bright-coloured powder, dodging monkeys in dusty temples and chanting Buddhist calls to prayer, I would have thought you were crazy. But I did, and I was surprised to learn that many fascinating aspects of Indian culture are related to religion.

Hinduism is India's most common religion, and its ancient beliefs include many gods, countless rituals and almost as many religious holidays. One of the most bizarre holidays I got to participate in was called Holi. We were warned well in advance about the fervour and chaos that Holi would bring, so my friends and I armed ourselves with ammunition: little bags of bright-coloured powder. Traditionally, Holi is a springtime ritual where people would cover each other with plants and herbs that had been ground into powder, as a blessing of good health for the coming year. Nowadays, however, those willing to spend hours in the shower partake in a massive colour war, where the aim of the game is to make sure your friends don't have an inch of skin left uncoloured.
