October 20, 2009 Shanghai – The Modern Drama Valley, a government sponsored organization that aims to become the “Broadway of the East” had their district singing competition finals at the Shanghai Centre Theatre Sunday.

Among the judges was New York City’s own Carrie Hill, star of Drama Valley’s Broadway production now playing at the Shanghai Centre. Miss Hill was entertained and impressed by the afternoons events.
“A variety of singers of all ages performed today and I was pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm of the audience and the skill set and passion that the singers displayed. I hope that these entertainers follow their dreams and continue studying and performing both American Musical Theatre and the art of singing itself.”

Carrie Hill has been a professional singer and actress in New York City for nine years. She began her musical studies at the age of 5 studying piano and later started classical voice lessons at the age of thirteen.  After four years of Vocal Music training in college, Carrie went on to New York City to further her Musical Theater studies at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.  Directly following school, Miss Hill began working theatrically in a variety of venues all around the United States.

She has now brought her musical talents all the way from Broadway to perform with a cast of twenty other singers and dancers. Carrie describes her experiences performing here in Shanghai "The cast and I are very grateful to be given the opportunity to perform in such a beautiful city as Shanghai and in such a great space as the Shanghai Centre Theater. Being part of a Chinese Musical Theater production has been quite an experience—but  not too far off from the crazy, ever-changing, hectic, and fun experience of opening a show in New York City.”

The cast auditioned in the Summer of 2009 in New York City and began rehearsal in Shanghai in early September. When asked what she plans to do during her off-time she explained "I am really looking forward to seeing the awesome things China has to offer. Most of us have planned to take a trip up to see Beijing, and hope to visit China’s beautiful countryside as well.  I am also looking forward to showing my family around China when they visit for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The weather here specifically is a real treat, because back at home in New York right now, it is cold!"

For the time being, Miss Hill and the rest of the cast are enjoying the Shanghai-Broadway lifestyle.  Most days consist of one 90 minute show, with vigorous preparation, including a total body and vocal warm up.  The cast are all integrating with local culture and making local friends as well."We are so lucky to have a team of Chinese students and professionals helping us backstage.  We would be lost without their support both with the show, and in learning Chinese!"
