最新的《胡润百富榜》描绘了居住在北京的中国最富有的人是如何过日子的。根据该杂志的报道，北京是中国富人的聚居之地，这些“新贵族”不但拥有至少三座豪宅和名车，在艺术收藏品和高档名牌上的花费也是一掷千金，还热衷于各种高品味的娱乐活动。

High-rollers in Beijing need to spend at least 87 million yuan on property, cars and other luxury goods in order to be regarded as one of the city's "new aristocrats", or upper class, the report said.

报告称，为了成为他人眼中的城市“新贵族”或上等阶层的一员，北京的富人至少要在房产、汽车和其他奢侈品上花掉 8700 万元。

在上面的报道中，high-roller 就是指“富人”。此外，high-roller 还经常用来指“挥金如土的人”和“狂赌的人”。例如：The son of our dean is a high roller.（我们主任的儿子挥金如土。）Arnold has always been a high roller when it comes to gambling.（赌博时，阿诺德总是不考虑后果乱下赌注。）

表示“挥金如土的人”还可以用 free-spender，squanderer 和 bleeding cully 来表示。其中 bleeding cully 可译为“出血的呆瓜”，暗含钱被骗走的意思。
