China Celebrates Its First Netizens' Day

China has the largest online population in the world.

On Monday, more than 300 million Chinese Internet users celebrate the first Netizens' Day in China.
Tingting has more.

Renowned Scholars, popular bloggers and hundreds of netizens have gathered at Beijing's CCTV tower to celebrate the first Netizens' Day in China.

Hu Qiheng is from the Internet Society of China (ISC), the organizer of the event.

"By this June, China already had 338 million netizens. Netizens are the citizens of the cyber world. While they enjoy their online lives, they should shoulder corresponding responsibilities. We hope that Netizens' Day is an event that cultivates netizenship and cultivates an active and positive Internet culture in China."

On September 14th, 1987, the first email written by the Chinese was created in Beijing. Later it was sent via the Internet to other countries for the first time in China's history. That event marked the beginning of China's online communication with the global internet community.

Werner Zorn, known as the "Father of the Internet" in Germany, helped China send that first e-mail.

Ronda Hauben is the author of the renowned book "Netizens."

First published online in 1994, the book introduced the term "netizen."

A series of events are being held in Beijing to celebrate the anniversary.

Among them, the country's 10 most popular bloggers are receiving awards after being selected in an online vote.
