“How big a fool are you, old man? If there are enemies in this wood, a fire is the last thing we want.”

the last thing we want，这里是偏正短语，定语后置。

这句话我们可以把它拆分成两句。A fire is the last thing.  We want the thing.

合并两个句子，并把相同的部分放在一起。A fire is the last thing ( the thing) we want.

再用关系代词that/ which 替代the thing形成定语从句：A fire is the last thing which we want.

其中thing 是被修饰目标，又叫先行词。

that/ which和前面的thing形成了关系，是关系代词，又叫引导词。它在从句中作宾语，所以还可以省略，就变成了：A fire is the last thing we want.

last thing 最后的东西。这里有中西方文化的差异，不是压箱底的，而是表示最不想要的，所以排到名单的最后。如果有人对你说，You are the last man I want to see. 不是代表你对他重要，而是他最恨你，永远不想见到你了。

“There’s some enemies a fire will keep away,” Gared said. “Bears and direwolves and and other things.”
“有些东西就只怕火，”盖瑞道，“比如熊、冰原狼、还有……还有好些东西。”

Ser Waymar’s mouth became a hard line. “No fire.”
威玛爵士紧抿嘴唇。“我说不准就是不准。”

hard line，指强硬的手段和态度。The school should adopt a hard line on puppy love.
