a cold snap (n) – a sudden short period of very cold weather 寒流

The USA is experiencing a very cold snap at the moment.
美国人民此刻正经受着寒流的威胁。

hibernate (v) – to sleep through the winter months 冬眠,蛰伏

We don’t see our neighbors during the winter as we all love to hibernate in the warmth of our homes.
冬天我们通常看不到邻居们,因为我们喜欢蛰伏在自己温暖的小家里。

wind chill (n) – when the wind makes the air temperature feel colder 寒风

It might be zero degrees on the thermometer, but the wind chill makes it feel like -3 degrees.
温度计上显示气温可能是零上几度,但是寒风让人觉得气温好像是在零下3度的样子。

slush (n) – snow that is starting to melt and become dirt 融雪,软泥

I don’t like it when the snow turns to slush. It’s so ugly.
我很讨厌冰雪融化的样子。丑爆了。

snowbound (adj) – in a situation in which snow makes travelling impossible 被雪困住的

Many flights at Heathrow airport were cancelled as it was snowbound over the last week.
自从上周被雪困住后,西斯罗机场的许多航班都被迫取消了。

sleet (n) – a mixture of snow and rain 风雪,雨夹雪

Oh no, it’s not snow but sleet. I don’t like sleet.

snowfall (n) – the amount of snow that falls during a period of time 降雪,降雪量

We’ve had 8cm of snowfall overnight.

A lot of the expressions we have often have nothing to do with winter which can be confusing. Using some of these expressions will certainly add a sparkle to your English! Here are a few of my favourites:

to have a snowball’s chance in hell (informal) – to have no chance of doing or having something 根本没机会做某事或拥有某物

You have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning the lottery.
想要靠买彩票中大奖简直是白日做梦。

snowed under – with too much work to deal with 忙得不可开交的

We’re snowed under with applications for the job.
筛选简历让我们忙的不可开交。

put something on ice (informal) – to delay something 拖延,推迟某事

The negotiations were put on ice when the market fell sharply.
市场大幅下跌时,所有谈判都被暂时搁置。

to break the ice – to make people feel less nervous in a social situation 打破沉默,破冰之行

He told a few jokes to break the ice.
为了不至于冷场他讲了几个笑话给大家听。

on thin ice – at risk of annoying someone 如履薄冰,处于惹怒别人的边缘

I’m warning you, you’re on thin ice.
我警告你,你在挑战我的底线。

to get cold feet – to suddenly get too scared to do something planned 临阵退缩

She cancelled the wedding because she got cold feet.
她临阵脱逃取消了婚礼。

pure as the driven snow – to be completely innocent (often used to suggest the opposite) 纯洁无暇(常用于否定形式)

I don’t think she is as pure as the driven snow.
我并不认为她很天真纯洁。

in the cold light of day – to think about something clearly, without emotions, and often feel shame afterwards 冷静地,毫无感情因素干扰的切合实际的再想一想,通常会感到懊恼,丢人

The next morning, in the cold light of day, Emma realised what an idiot she had been.
第二天早上,艾玛又重新冷静地思考了下,突然发现自己昨天很愚蠢。

to break into a cold sweat – to become scared about something 除了一身冷汗,为某事感到后怕

Kevin broke into a cold sweat when he realised the losses he had made.
意思到自己造成的损失有多大时,凯文不由的出了一身冷汗。
