The Landline telephone used to be an indispensible part of modern life. However, all over the world, the number of people with a landline is falling dramatically, because people prefer to use mobile phones.

I don't think the landline phones will be replaced by mobile phones completely in a short term, although I have cancelled the landline phones at home for years. There are various reasons that contribute to the long-lasting existence of the landline phone.

To begin with, no longer should we worry about the battery issues if we are using a landline phone. And I guess this is one of the reasons why the landline phone becomes a standard equipment in most workplaces. Apart from that, using a landline phone enables us to stay away from the electromagnetic radiation. A widely disputed report on horrible consequences caused by heavy usage of cell phones reveals a potential hazard of using mobile phone. Although the conclusion is still controversial, the best way for us is reducing the usage of mobile phones. Lastly, landline phones play a pivotal role in modern workplace. It suggests much extra information that a mobile phone can't give. For example, printing a landline phone number in your business card strongly implies that your company has a fixed workplace, which can remarkably enhance the credibility of your company.

As cell phones are becoming more and more popular, landline phones are getting replaced. Cell phones are convenient, since they are mobile. In places like the basement, the subway, certain buildings and the wilderness, however, there are no cell phones signals. If you work or live in those places, a cell phone will not be too helpful. I do not believe cell phones can completely replace landline phones; I would pick the landline over the cell phone, because I can feel the radiation from the cell phone giving me a headache. Cell phones are good for getting text messages where you have the information in writing.
