During the first four years of a child's life, a majority of parents (53%) read to their children every day or night. By the time they reach the age of five to eight, this tails off to 37%. Between the ages of eight and twelve, it falls to 21%. This is a direct reason that causes a decline in children's enjoyment of reading over the past five years. 55% of 11-year-old boys now say they enjoy reading -- compared with 70% five years ago. The percentage of girls has declined from 85% to 75% in the same period. Julia Strong, one of coordinators of a Family Reading Campaign, said that sharing books together has so many benefits for families. She strongly recommends that parent should involve in their children's reading, which has more of an influence on children's achievement than any other factor.
