背景介绍:

The so-called "disdain chain"(鄙视链) works like this: British drama fans look down on folks who prefer US shows, and they in turn look down on Korean soap fans. The lowest of the low in the disdain chain are fans of domestic or Thai dramas. Besides the disdain chain among drama fans, there are many other chains alike in our society.

话题:

1 What do you think of this disdain chain? Does it apply to you or do you have the same psychology?

OR 2 Why does this phenomenon arise in your mind?

OR 3 What's the social influence of this kind of chain? Does it have adverse impact?

范例1:

“Disdain chain” is this kind of phenomenon that one looks down upon others while having overconfidence in himself, which arises in the network society and can be commonly found there. Ridiculous as it is, there is no denying that everyone may be involved in these chains. The causes are complicated, especially when they refer to psychology.
First, this phenomenon can be regarded as self-protection. People long to gain superiority complex by disdaining others and this way enables them to get feelings of self-worth at the same time. Feeling more outstanding, therefore, they can eliminate the uneasiness and get a strong sense of belonging when they join their “class” in disdaining the “lower classes”.
Second, this may be a reflection of inequality in real world. Having an urgent desire to claim their own rights and dignity, netizens are obliged to pass the psychological unbalance on to the disdain chains. When disdain becomes so blatant(公然的) and people would not scruple(顾忌) to despise(鄙视) others, a new “hierarchy”(等级制度) forms. These man-made “classes” divide people and even breed(导致) “class conflicts” in a way. You can find many examples on the Internet.
I don’t think one has the right to disdain others just for the things they like. Moreover, neither individuality nor superiority will be really obtained in the disdain chain.

范例2:

It’s very natural for people to feel superior to others. The sense of superiority sometimes hurts but also sometimes stimulates the inferior to work better. For the “Major disdain chain”, it does hurt. When I was in high school, those majoring in arts are mostly forced to choose so because they cannot do well in science. Arts students are often disdained by science students who think they are much more clever. Sadly, this situation is also commonly seen on college campus. Meanwhile, the sense of superiority of others can also be an impetus for the inferior. There is a reason in forming the chains like “Browser disdain chain ”, “Social network disdain”, etc. Those ranking first have the capital to disdain because they are actually doing better than others to some degree. Only by comparison can one see his defects and be motivated to change.
