A decade ago, the cartoon series "The Smurfs" won everybody’s love in China and its theme song has lightened up many of our childhoods. Now the franchise has produced its second feature movie - "The Smurfs 2". Our Hollywood reporter Jonathan Shupack got a special invitation to the blue carpet premiere, and talked to the team behind this new 3D adventure-comedy.

In the sequel to the 2011 hit, "The Smurfs 2" teams up with their human friends to rescue Smurfette, who has been kidnapped by Gargamel since she knows a secret spell that can turn the evil sorcerer’s Naughties into real Smurfs.

The Smurfs always get themselves into some shenanigans on the screen. Mixing live action and animation, Neil Patrick Harris, who reprises his role as Patrick Winslow, describes his character.

"I’m again Patrick Winslow, we are an expecting couple and now we have a three-year-old son and stressed about his stepfather played by Brenden Gleeson – Victor’s his character's name...has to realize that he’s family and what family really means to him, and we’re taken by the Smurfs and we’re rushed to Paris and try to save Smurfette from Gargamel, and save the world. We’re saving the world," Harris said.

Actor JB Smoove, who plays one of the Naughties, says he can identify personally with his character Hackus. "I used to have my tongue hanging out when I was younger. Who knew that my tongue hanging out when I was a kid playing a cartoon – an animated character named Hackus? Who knew I’d be here with my tongue hanging out again?" Smoove said.

The production was shot in various locations around the world as "Smurfs 2" Director Raja Gonsell told us.

"This is the second round so everybody knew there would be some emptiness to act to. Actors would correct us and say no no no, that’s the wrong Smurf! It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had making a movie, honestly. In Paris, in Montreal," Gonsell said.

But you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy "Smurfs 2". Neil Patrick Harris said, "I don’t consider this a kids movie, really. I think it’s appropriate for all ages – it’s good for the little kids, it’s good for parents that are with them. It’s good for the couples that go – the technology with the 3D is amazing.

"So if I can do a movie that covers a lot of demographics in one shot, I will do that every time."
