President Obama says the controversial NSA surveillance programs are transparent. The president spoke to PBS's Charlie Rose, promised that the NSA is not listening to Americans’ phone calls or reading their emails. 
 
Afghan forces have formally taken the lead for handling security in their own country, following a formal handover from NATO. 
 
100,000 protesters crowded into the streets of eight Brazilian cities, including Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. They are angry about poor public services and the costs of hosting sporting events. 
 
And police in Truckee, California are using stand-up paddle boards to patrol area waterways. Officers say the boards help them patrol Donner Lake without intimidating visitors.
