The first H7N9 infection was reported in Beijing on Saturday... the first time the virus has appeared away from the Eastern part of the country. The 7 year old girl is currently being treated in hospital, but isn’t thought to be in a critical condition.

Warm weather..... and a belated Spring arrives in the Capital.

But it’s brought with it something that Beijingers hoped they wouldn’t hear....

The capital’s first case of the H7N9 "bird flu" virus was confirmed at a press briefing early on Saturday by the Municipal Health Bureau.

The patient is a seven-year-old girl who lives in the northeastern district of Shunyi. Her parents are live poultry traders.

The girl is said to have developed flu-like symptoms on Thursday. She was brought to Beijing’s Ditan Hospital around noon the same day, where she was diagnosed with a lung infection.

But her condition worsened, and she was transferred to intensive care on Thursday night.

The patient is now reported to be in a stable condition.

Cheng Jun, Vice President of Beijing Ditan Hospital, said, "We gave the child the Tamiflu drug, as well as intravenous drips. Following both Chinese and international medical treatment, the patient’s temperature fell from 40 to 37 degrees. The patient has now started to eat, as of Saturday morning, and her temperature is normal."

Doctors say the girl will be kept in hospital for at least a week, to observe her condition.

A spokesman for Beijing’s municipal health bureau says it's vital for a patients to be treated as early as possible.

Zhong Dongbo, Spokesman of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Health, said, "It took us a day and a half to bring her symptoms under control. The girl’s parents had read a prevention booklet that we distributed, which told them to seek immediate treatment at the first sign of infection. It meant that they were able to bring her to the right hospital very quickly."

The bureau says the girl’s parents currently show no sign of any flu-like symptoms.
