21 miners have been killed and four others are missing after a coal and gas outburst in Guizhou Province in southwest China.

The accident occurred at around 8:00 pm Tuesday at the Machang Coal Mine in Liupanshui City. The mine belongs to the Gemudi Company of the Guizhou Water and Mining Group. 83 miners were working underground at the time. 58 managed to escape.

The head of the rescue team says the bodies of the 21 dead miners have been retrieved, and that rescue efforts have been hampered by the toxic gas levels in the mine. An investigation into the accident is under way.
