The islands of the maldives, situated in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka, have been discribed as "gem-like", "romantic" and "spectacular". They may have won such praise because of their sparkling white-sand beaches and their many luxury resorts. Or perhaps the praise is due to the colorful world beneath the ocean's surface. Whatever the reason, people leave Maldives thrilled by the beauty they've seen.

A tropical paradise above water

From the air, the 1190 islands appears as green dots encircled by the light-blue lagoons. Thick tropical vegetation covers the low-lying islands, which don't rise more than 2.4m above the see level. On the ground, smooth, sandy beaches and graceful palm trees welcome island visitors.

Eighty-seven of the islands have been developed into luxury resorts. They feature bungalow (many built over the water), restaurants with the excellent cuisine, spas, healty clubs, and friendly staff who pamper guests. For guests who enjoy outdoor activities, the resorts also offer whale and dolpin watching, wind surfing and fishing. But to experience the most stunning aspect of the Maldives, one must go under water.
