Julian Fellowes and the Downton Abbey cast showed preview footage and revealed details about the period drama's third series at the PBS Television Critics press tour yesterday (July 22).

Financial woes and the Irish troubles will be two themes that dominate the third run, according to show creator Fellowes. "The '20s are a more nebulous time," Fellowes told reporters. "In the third series you see the impact on this family of the Irish Troubles.

"That really started up after the end of the First World War, and actually, at the time, was much more the headline than the suffragettes or the other things. The Irish problem seemed to be a kind of yawning difficulty for the British empire and everything. But, you know, again I don't think a lot of people know about that. It's rather nice to go into that."

In footage shown to reporters, Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) and Cora Crawley (Elizabeth McGovern) were seen talking about their money woes, Brendan Coyle's Mr Bates is still in prison, while Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Matthew (Dan Stevens) are shown having a heated fight in which she accuses him of disloyalty.

Commenting on the Robert and Cora storyline, Fellowes said: "Cora's upbringing was not the same as Robert's... but as things start to change and the plates are shifting, and we are reminded what Cora's comes from. If anyone understands the world that is coming, it's Cora."

The writer also ruled out any of the characters heading to America, claiming the arrival of Shirley MacLaine as Martha Levinson was a way of bringing a US angle to the show.

Fellowes's show picked up 16 Emmy nominations last week. Downton Abbey's third series will air in the autumn on ITV1 in the UK. It will air in the US on PBS on January 6, 2013.
