When Lexie died in the "Grey's Anatomy" Season 8 finale this spring, fans were shocked -- and devastated. Creator Shonda Rhimes revealed that the death a decision she made in collaboration with actress Chyler Leigh, who felt that her time at Seattle Grace was over.

"Ultimately we both decided this was the right time for her character's journey to end. As far as I'm concerned Chyler will always remain a part of the Shondaland family and I can't wait to work with her again in the future," Rhimes said.

In an interview with TVGuide, Leigh adds that Lexie's death was the scene she was most proud of in the course of her run on the show. "It really was a chance for me to be able to go from the beginning of the character to the end. There's something that's very bittersweet about that. Something about being able to be there for the moment of her death that I appreciate. I don't know if that's morbid or not, but that's how I feel," she says.

Fans of Leigh's don't need to fret -- just because she's no longer on "Grey's Anatomy" doesn't mean she's going anywhere. While she stresses that she's grateful to have more time to spend with her three children, and less time to spend in the car between Orange County and Los Angeles, she hopes to get back into TV... just, you know, less angsty TV.

"I'm always down to do a sitcom. I did That 80's Show back in the day and that was a really great experience. I think comedy would be good for a while," she says. In the meantime, she and husband Nathan West are writing a children's book and a musical. They're also working with the Thirst Project to give people all over the world access to clean drinking water. Her next film, "Brake," is coming out in March -- and though it won't include "Grey's Anatomy" costar Justin Chambers as originally intended, she says it's a "really incredible little movie."

Oh -- and while she does think that Mark Sloane was the love of Lexie's life, she hopes he'll pick up the pieces after the disaster.

"The roller coaster between them was always very dynamic and I think realistic. When it comes to death we never know the date or the hour," she says. "There is absolute shock value to that. As far as their relationship, it was in some ways very young. So Rachel and Ross [from Friends]. It's so hard to put a pin in what went wrong or how it could have gone better. But will Mark go on? Absolutely. He'll move right along. That's just what Mark Sloane does. But initially I hope there will be a devastation.
