Rose Valley in the southern Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria is famous for its rose-growing industry. It cultivates three fourth of the world's rose varieties, and the one valley alone produces a huge share of the world's rose oil. Their yearly rose festival celebrates their famous industry.

Rose valley is a 60 kilometer long strip in the southern Balkan Mountains. The climate and soil there are ideal for growing roses that produce lots of oil.

The town of Kazanlak produces the valley’s most oil-rich flowers. And during the rose festival, farmers and middle school students there don traditionalcostumes to perform the rose-picking dance for residents and travelers. The festival launches the month long rose-picking season. That means busy work for farmers.

Rose farmer said, “We pick the flower from 6 to 11 o’clock in the morning. The petals contain the most oil during this period. I can pick 40 kilograms throughout the morning.”

Bulgaria makes up 40 percent of the world output of rose oil, and residents are proud of that productivity. The Kazanlak Rose Festival has been around for over a century now, and it shows no sign of coming to an end any time soon.
