Helming the project is Sean Durkin, who directed last year’s haunting drama Martha Marcy May Marlene. His stab at the horrific source material (adapted from William Peter Blatty’s best-selling novel) will depict how a family deals with the unholy possession of their young daughter. When scientific and medical explanations fail, Father Damien Karras is called on to exorcise the demon spirit.

So far, the project has backing from Morgan Creek and will be produced by Roy Lee, who worked on The Departed and Quarantine. And although The Exorcist series has yet to be formally presented to networks, TV execs have reportedly expressed interest in meeting with Sean about his ghoulish project.
