Titanic in 3D has already made 400 million yuan in the Chinese box office. And today we look at the cutting-edge technology that's at work behind the scenes to bring a classic movie into the digital age. Tears and tissues at the ready.

The key to a good movie is always a touching story. But now with 3D technology, the story-telling is enhanced in every way. That's why it has rekindled the many people's passion for this classic.

A movie goer said, "I was quite young the last time I saw it, I think it would be a whole new experience."

But injecting 3D life into an old movie is no easy task - it took over 300 technicians 6 months to complete the conversion at the expense of 18 million US dollars. And it wasn't just technical labour, but a lot of creativity too.

Prof. Sun Lijun, Beijing Film Academy, said, "The technicians simulate the difference between the left and right eyes with two cameras - using this difference they are able to create an optical illusion, bringing depth to the pictures. But it's a delicate and demanding process. A technician and a film artist have to work together on each scene to ensure the final product is comfortable and smooth in the eyes of the audience."

Demanding as it may be, the reward is tremendous. Released on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, the 3D movie has been successfully revived, grossing over 20 billion US dollars world-wide in less than 12 days of it release. The movie is certainly not sinking.
