Part A

Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear 2 passages in English. After you have heard each paragraph, interpret it into Chinese. Start interpreting at he signal and stop it at the signal. You may take notes while you are listening. Remember you will hear the passages only once.

Now let us begin Part A with the first passage.

Passage 1:

We’re aware of an emergence of a new and exciting mode of information economy driven by netoreded technology. What I want to say is that the Internet is transforming business operation patterns and contributing to what is called the new information economy. An immediate consequence of this profound change is the simplification of business transaction. Thanks to the advanced technology something very important is happening to the US economy. We are able to grow faster without triggering inflation than we thought possible..//

Of course, there’s the down side. The new economy does not mean we will never have another recession. It does not mean stock prices will stay at their lofty levels or that there will never be another bear market. Nobody is promising you a rose garden. I anticipate uncertainty accompanying the emergence of the new information economy. But because of what I view as higher productivity, I see the possibility of sustained economic growth without the threat of inflation, more jobs and higher wages.

Passage 2:

This year marks very special milestone for our company. After the grand opening of our joint venture in China last year, we established as of the beginning of this year our own sales, marketing, after-sales services and distribution organization in China. What’s more, we are expanding our engineering group and superior lifetime combined with competitive prices are still the most important trends of power tools.//

I am confident of our strategic plans in China for 2006 and onward. These plans will enable us to stay closer to the Chinese market, identify the market needs faster, and develop more customized products and services, all at a very competitive price. We expect the Chinese market for power tools to grow at a pace of 8% in the coming years, and we expect to participate actively in this development by enhancing local R&D and creating additional jobs.

Passage 2:

中国政府一直高度重视环境保护，上世纪80年代把保护环境确定为基本国策，90年代初把可持续发展确立为国家战略，进入新世纪，我们提出了要坚持以人为本，落实科学发展观，实现经济社会与环境、人与自然的协调发展。

我们要在发展中保护环境，目前已进行了一些积极探索：一是加强环境法制，建立一系列规章、标准组成的法律体系，同时不断严格环境执法。二是加大环境教育，鼓励公众参与和社会监督。通过上述措施，中国在经济快速增长的情况下，污染加剧的趋势得到初步遏制。

The Chinese Government has always attached great importance to environmental protection. It has identified environmental protection as one of the State policies in the 1980s. It identified sustainable development as a national strategy in early 1990s. In the new century, the Chinese Government has put forward to adhere to the people-centered principle, fulfill the scientific development approach,and integrate the coordinated development of the economy, society and environment.//

The environment should be protected in the process of development and active esplorations have been conducted: first, strengthening envoronmental legislation. China have established a legal system composed of these environmental laws and regulations. Second, enhancing environmental education and encouraging public supervision and participation. With these measures, the worsning trend of the pollution has been under preliminary control in the context of rapid economic growth in China.
