You ache all over and have a fever. Do you go to a doctor? Not in the United States. There, you take care of yourself. When you fell like you have a cold or the flu, you buy over-the-counter medicines. Americans only see the doctor when something is seriously wrong. Why? A doctor visit can cost more than $80, and health insurance doesn't always pay. So, it is cheaper to rely on cold medicines from a drugstore. To see the doctor, people need an appointment. Most people have a regular doctor they go to. And usually, in an emergency, that doctor will make time to see them. People who don't have a doctor can go to an urgent care center because no appointment is necessary. And only in a true emergency do people go to a hospital emergency room. Care there is very expensive. When you do see a doctor, he or she may or may not prescribe medicine for you. Often, rest is the best cure.
