The chancellor for the state's university system said Monday that three resignations at Dickinson State University are related to Friday's disclosure that more than 500 students, mostly from China, were given degrees they hadn't earned.

Another 160 Chinese students in DSU's international program don't have either the right credentials or paperwork to be at the school and a small number of those are waiting for degrees that now won't be coming.

The information was uncovered in a North Dakota University System audit that cited a deteriorating process throughout the university and a slipshod international program without controls and oversights. Students lacked language proficiency, didn't have transcripts and didn't take the classes they needed for their degrees, the audit said.

After Chancellor Bill Goetz and new DSU President D.C. Coston made the public disclosure, Doug LaPlante,dean of education, business and applied sciences was found dead in a park near campus of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Goetz did not explain LaPlante's relationship to the turmoil in the international program,But he did confirm that the resignations of DSU Registrar Marshall Melbye, the former Director of Student Recruitment and Enrollment Management Steve Glasser and Vice President of Academic Affairs Jon Brudvig were related.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple said the situation at DSU is tragic and serious and, for now, he has more questions than answers.
"The main questions are ‘where did this occur,' ‘who's responsible' and ‘could it have been avoided?'" Dalrymple said. He said the university will have to restore public confidence that its academic programs are functioning.
