Grab your winter clothes and running shoes! This year the surprisingly popular Antarctica Marathon takes place on March 5, 2008. Runners from around the world will face freezing temperatures, chilly winds and difficult terrain during the 42.195-km race. Spotting penguins, seals and whales during the run adds to the experience!

Runners arrive by boat on King George Island just off the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. They pay close to US$5,000 to participate in the race, which goes up and down muddy, snowy hills and across icy streams.

Since the course location is so remote, runners must carry water and food and rely on one another to keep warm. Last year, one runner had reached the race’s halfway point and was going up a steep glacier when fatigue set in. He had also run out of supplies, but another runner shared some juice with him, and his energy returned.

What attracts people to this marathon? "People are really looking for adventure,” says Thom Gilligan, the president of Marathon Tours and founder of this race. “There’s nothing more extreme than this."
