Every four years, February has an extra day – the 29th. In fact, that's today! A year with 29 days in February, instead of the normal 28, is called a "leap year." The extra day is necessary to keep the calendar in line with the earth's movement around the sun. If it weren't for leap years, the four seasons would not start at the right time.

Check out these fun facts about this special addition to the calendar:

→ During leap years, the days after February 29th “leap” ahead. For example, in 2007, March 1st was a Thursday. But in 2008, March 1st will be a Saturday. The Friday will be “leapt over.” That’s how leap year got its name.

→ People born on February 29th are often called “leaplings.” They celebrate their birthdays on February 28th or March 1st during non-leap years.

→ In Scotland, being born on February 29th is considered unlucky. In Greece, getting married during a leap year is also thought to be bad luck.

→ Years ago, February 29 was the only day that women could propose to men. And in Great Britain, laws once existed that called for a man to pay a fine if he turned a woman down.
