Kuomintang Chairman Ma Ying-jeou has been re-elected as Taiwan leader. After that win on Saturday night, he promised to work to improve Cross-Strait ties in his next term of office.

Ma Ying-jeou thanked his supporters at a large gathering held at the KMT headquarters in Taipei amid a heavy rain. He attributed his victory to policies made to fight corruption and maintain peace. He said, Taiwan people showed their recognition of the efforts the KMT has made to shelf disputes with the mainland and maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait.

Ma promised to continue to deepen the Cross-Strait relations and consolidate mutual trust with the mainland in the coming four years. Ma Ying-jeou defeated the Democratic Progressive Party Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen and the People First Party Chairman James Soong in a three-way race. Ma led Tsai by about 800, 000 votes.
