For Elvis's fans today there was really only one place to be, 75,000 people headed to his former home Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee to mark the singer's death with a candlelit vigil.

There were so many people that were still queuing to get close to Elvis's grave 11 hours after the gate first opens.

"It's just amazing all the people out here and the devotion they have to, I mean all the candles are lit, and just...It's, it's just fabulous. It's fabulous. Everybody needs to do it once."

"Bright light city gonna set my soul, gonna set my soul on fire..."

Even 30 years on from his death from a heart attack, Elvis's fan base is still global. As a result today's anniversary has been marked around the world from Germany, to Japan, to here in the UK. In London's Bake Street, they stage not a vigil but a party to celebrate the man they call the king.

"He was the greatest in his time and the whole time. He had the finest singing voice over anyone, and that's well across the whole spectrum from rock and roll, to ballads, to gospel. He could do a whole lot and with absolute style as well and no one can get that close. He was so good."

"The band was jumping and the joint began to swing. You should've heard those knocked out jailbirds sing... "

It's hard to underestimate the culture impact of Elvis Presley on popular music. The world had never seen or heard anyone like him before. Teenager girls saw an idol. Middle America saw reds. By the time of his premature death, the king had revolutionized popular music.

"This is Presley's calendar for slim fans, and slightly larger fans."

Sit Shaw have devoted his life fan business to remembering the man.

"If you say you don't like Elvis, you don't like music. He did blues, country, gospel, rock and roll, rockabilly, you know, ballads, he did it all.

"Just call my name..."

And while some of the today's tributes clearly need a bit of work....

"And I will be wrong..."

"That's a wonder..."

30 years on from Elvis's death, his army of fans are working hard to keep his memory very much alive.

Background information:

rockabilly (also Rock-a-Billy)

Rockabilly is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music to emerge during the 1950s. It's a form of popular music combining features of rock 'n' roll and bluegrass.

The term "rockabilly" is a portmanteau of "rock," from rock and roll, and "hillbilly", the latter a reference to the country music (often called "hillbilly music" in the 1940s and '50s) that contributed strongly to the style's development. Other important influences on rockabilly include Western Swing, blues music, boogie woogie, and Jump blues. Although there are notable exceptions, its origins lie primarily in the American South.

The influence and popularity of the style waned in the 1960s, but during the late 1970s and early 1980s, rockabilly enjoyed a major revival of popularity that has endured to the present, often within a rockabilly enthusiast subculture.
