Piot spoke of why AIDS has become so widespread in Africa. It has to do with the legacy of the past, of colonialism, of apartheid, that broke up families, where the men would be working in the mines, or in other parts of the continent in plantations for 11 months, living in hostels, and where their own identity and self esteem would be broken. Where women are not in control of their sexuality. Where it's hard to say no. He spoke of the need to tackle social causes in the fight against AIDS. If we don't change what is acceptable as behavior as social norms, I think we will not be able to stop this epidemic. The good news is that many countries, many communities have demonstrated, it is possible to be successful in the fight against AIDS. And that in itself is so important because it proves that we can do it.
