1. John Dryden 约翰·德莱顿 被称作是“英国批评之父”

2. Alexander Pope 亚历山大•蒲柏 18世纪最伟大的诗人，诗中多使用heroic couplets（英雄双韵体sh）

二、The Rise of Novel 小说的兴起
18中期兴起了英国现代小说，出现了大批有影响的小说家。
1. Samuel Richardson 理查逊
代表作：Pamela《帕美拉》，是书信体（ Epistolary Novel）的形式和对心理的描写（Psychological Description）
2. Oliver Goldsmith 奥利弗·哥尔德史密斯
代表作：The Vicar of Wakefield《威克菲牧师传》 是英国文学史上著名的感伤小说之一。
3. Laurence Sterne 劳伦斯·斯特恩
打破传统的叙事方法，创作了《项迪传》，而被认为是英国现代派文学的先驱（Pioneer of modern literature）。
4.Daniel Defoe 笛福 英国文学史上第一个现实主义(Realism)小说家,
代表作：Robinson Crusoe《鲁滨逊漂流记》，讲述故事情节并分析鲁滨逊这一人物形象。
5.Jonathan Swift 斯威夫特 是英国文学史上著名的讽刺小说家，以犀利的文笔对教会和社会的虚伪腐败进行了辛辣的讽刺.

6. Henry Fielding 亨利•菲尔丁 英国小说之父（Father of English novel）
He was the first to write a “Comic epic in prose”(散文体史诗), and the first to give the modern novel its structure and style.

三、Gothic Novels 哥特小说
Gothic novels are mostly stories of mystery and horror which take place in some haunted or dilapidated Middle Age castles – were turned out profusely by both male and female writers.
哥特小说主要是一些描写神秘和恐怖的小说，主要描写发生在一些闹鬼和破烂不堪的中世纪城堡里的故事。
四、Sentimentalism 感伤主义
Tomas Gray 托马斯·格雷
代表作：Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” 《墓园挽歌》
The poem established his fame as the leader of the sentimental poetry of the day. 这首诗奠定了他为感伤主义先驱的地位，尤其是墓园派 “the Graveyard School”.
