A magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck off Japan's northeastern coast at about 2:30 this afternoon, triggering a tsunami advisory that was later lifted.

No immediate reports of damage or injuries were issued. The quake was strongly felt in Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures,causing the bullet trains in the region to shut down for safety checks. Operators at the Tokyo Electric Power Co. say no abnormalities have been observed at Fukushima No.1 nuclear plant.This was the first sizeable quake in the area in more than a month.

In the weeks following the huge March quake, Japan was frequently rocked by aftershocks, including several stronger ones above magnitude 7.0.
