The article, "Too Asian?" published on the popular Canadian magazine, Macleans, led to a lot of controversy for University admissions, last Winter. The article discusses how two girls deciding what school to go to did not even consider applying to the University of Toronto (Canada) because "The only people from our school who went to U of T were Asian." The girl 'Alexandra' said "All the white kids go to Queen’s, Western and McGill." (See Note 1)

NOTE 1 | The University of Toronto, Queen's, Western, and McGill are all top Canadian Universities in Eastern Canada.

The article goes on to talk about how an 'Asian school' has the reputation of being one that is so academically focused that other students feel they cannot compete with Asian students and they can't have fun.

According to the article, for white students, competing with Asian students "require a sacrifice of time and freedom they’re not willing to make." The article describes Asian students as those that "tend to be strivers, high achievers and single-minded in their approach to university."

“At graduation a Canadian—i.e. ‘white’—mother told me that I’m the reason her son didn’t get a space in university and that all the immigrants in the country are taking up university spots,” says Frankie Mao, a 22-year-old arts student at the University of British Columbia. (See Note 2) “I knew it was wrong, being generalized in this category,” says Mao, “but I worked hard for it.”

NOTE 2 | The University of British Columbia is a top Canadian University in Western Canada. In the article by MacLeans, it was described as 'too Asian."
