When I was still a little girl, people around me all considered learning English a fashion at that time. As time goes by, the importance of learning English becomes more and more obvious. We use English to have lectures, communicate with each other and apply for submission of degree or jobs. English is now a commonly used language in the world. So when I chose my major in university, English was selected once again.

上海话“进口”英语词汇 比如发嗲

Since I was born in Shanghai, Shanghai dialect became my mother tongue. In addition to it, I acquired Mandarin simultaneously. So I am a native speaker for both Shanghai dialect and Mandarin. Later I found that many Shanghai dialects are borrowed from English which share the similarities in pronunciations and meaning of words so it partly helped in acquiring some English vocabularies. As “水门汀” in Shanghai dialect is borrowed from ‘cement’ in English. “发嗲” in Shanghai dialect means coquetry which is from English “发dear”.

I began learning English when I was 5 years old in kindergarten. Although I can not remember clearly what exactly did I learn in that early period of time, I can tell most of them were some English nursery rhymes and tongue twisters. After then, I went to primary school which is an experimental school in English. Since the primary school and my kindergarten went through a coordinate process. So we had English class from grade one.

小学课外活动丰富 英文歌最给力

The most impressive thing from my primary school was that there were full of different activities related to English such as English songs, rhymes, poems, dialogues and something we called them Alvin and the Chipmunks. These activities were not only limited in English classes but also in our class breaks or lunch breaks.

It was normal when someone heard English songs from school broadcast during breaks. So every pupil in our school can sing several English songs fluently although we didn't even know what they meant at that time!

在英语中醒来 久而久之竟能脱口而出

Besides, we had English shows in some shopping malls which I think was a very good way to practice oral English and courage. What’s more? Our teacher told us to circularly play tape recorder of any kind of listening materials as soon as we get up every morning. I did what they told and it was so surprise for me to find one day I can speak out those from the recorder unconsciously. I think this method can help English learners acquire the pronunciation of that language accurately.

澳洲夏令营 和“土著”人聊英语

In middle school, I went to Australia for a one-month summer camp. We live in local people's home individually so it was a very good opportunity for us to practice English. Since I was still very young that time and my English was certainly not mature, the communication between English speaking people can correct many of my mistakes in oral English. The most extrude advantage was that I could realize English cultures in immediate concerns of myself. Although it was only as long as one month, my English improved a lot from this summer camp which laid a solid foundation for the further English study especially in the listening part and speaking part.

语法练习题正确率高 分析神马的不要问我

It is no doubt that sufficient exercises are necessary for learning a second language. Many of knowledge are recorded by doing exercises especially the part of grammar. Grammar learning is the most difficult part for me to learn in second language acquisition. My middle school English teacher did not pay much attention on the teaching of grammar since she considered English is the language for us to use rather than to understand. So in the following school exams, I always knew how to do the grammar exercise correctly but did not know how to explain them clearly by using the grammatical explanation.

听力不是难题 电影戏剧有助了解文化

On the contrary, the part of listening is the easiest thing for me maybe due to the previous exercise and experiences. I am also interested in watching original English films and drama which can lead me to the depth of the culture of English speaking countries.

异国文化是老大难

However, compare to the application of English, culture and tradition are so far rather an unfamiliar field to me. When I took the TEM8 test, I found much historical or general knowledge which I did not know before.

In my point of view, as an English learner or a linguistic researcher, we should not only know how to apply and use English as a tool but also know how to consider it as a culture. As we may one day become a Chinese teacher to foreigners, it will be one of the major tasks for us to be proficient in cultural backgrounds of English speaking countries so that we can compare it with the culture in Chinese and teach our foreign students more accurately.
