A series of strong aftershocks have rattled New Zealand's quake-devastated city of Christchurch, injuring scores of people.

So far, no fatalities are reported.

The first 5.2-magnitude aftershock struck the city at lunchtime. Just over an hour later, a stronger 6.0-magnitude quake struck, sending residents into a panic.

"I was just sitting at my desk and it started to shake like usual and thought of jumping under my desk and then. It just happens so quickly, doesn't it? And then it's all over."

The tremors have left about 47,000 homes in the city's eastern suburbs without power amid nearly freezing temperatures.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key says Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker is thinking about declaring a local state of emergency to allow clean-up.

"It's another blow to the Christchurch residents who have already endured so much, however today's events in no way weaken the government's long term commitment to rebuild Christchurch and surrounding areas."

Christchurch has been shaken on a daily basis by thousands of aftershocks since the fatal February earthquake, which killed 181 people.
