President Barack Obama has signed a short-term spending bill to pay for federal operations through Friday. The measure was needed to keep the government open long enough for Congress to sign off on the budget deal reached late last night.

The president made a quick stop at the Lincoln Memorial Saturday to drive home the point that national parks and monuments are open. The deal last night avoided a government shutdown that would have closed popular tourist sites.

At least seven people were killed and 15 wounded when a gunman went on a shooting rampage near Amsterdam. Witnesses say the man appeared to be shooting at random and that children are among the victims. They say the man eventually killed himself.

Award winning director Sidney Lumet has died. He made such acclaimed films such as "Network," "Serpico," "Dog Day Afternoon" and "12 Angry Men." He was 86 years old.
