1975年的7月1日，密歇根州底特律城，Stevens夫妇在家门口发现了一个牛奶箱，里面装着一个用塑料纸包裹的婴儿，它的手腕上系着一张神秘的字条：‘I love you’，这个婴儿就是后来的Sufjan Stevens。
Sufjan Stevens的音乐有中很强烈的乡土意识，在INDIE音乐中，他的音乐应该算是NEOFOLK（新民谣）或者Progressive Folk。这种音乐以内省、复杂的POST-DYLAN（后BOB DYLAN民谣）音乐为起点，在文字层面和音乐层面都有新的发展，而且常常融合了来自不同的民族音乐风格的影响。
