三峡工程位于西陵峡的三斗坪，由跨江大坝、水电站和通航设施组成。作为世界上最大的水利工程，三峡工程在防洪、发电、航运、养殖等方面具有巨大效益。2006年5月20日，对于著名的长江三峡水电工程来说，是具有历史意义的一天：三峡大坝正式建成，比原计划提前了近10个月。三峡工程是世界上最大的水电站，总装机容量1820万千瓦，年发电量847亿千瓦时。
