企业家“entrepreneur”一词是从法语中借来的，其原意是指“冒险事业的经营者或组织者”。企业家是从事组织、管理并承担经营风险的人。企业家要有企业精神（entrepreneurship）和事业心（entrepreneur spirit）。

美籍奥地利政治经济学家约瑟夫·熊彼特(Joseph AloisSchumpeter )曾提出这样一个观点：企业家是从事“创造性破坏（creative destruction）”的创新者。创新（innovation）是企业家精神（entrepreneurship）的内核。
