President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao are promising closer cooperation on issues ranging from trade to the fight against terrorism. But at a joint White House news conference Wednesday, the two did not narrow their division on human rights issues.

An abortion doctor in Philadelphia is being charged with eight counts of murder in the deaths of a patient and seven babies. Prosecutors say the babies were born alive, and then killed with scissors.

Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut has confirmed he will retire next year. The decision ends a career in which Lieberman became his party's vice presidential nominee but six years later ran as an independent after losing the Democratic primary.

The hunt by Tiger Woods for a tournament title will resume next week in San Diego. That'll be his first tournament of 2011. He hasn't won on tour since back in 2009, just before his sex scandal erupted.
