Wang Shun, who won a swimming gold medal in the 200-metre individual medley, briefly mentioned to a reporter that his medal was also peeling. That video also went viral on Weibo.

The Tokyo Olympic Games' Organizing Committee offered a rebuttal to the "quality" issue Xueying posed, telling the Global Times the material coming off the gymnast's medal was its protective coating instead of the actual gold plating.
This coating is intended to protect the medals from stains and scratches and "does not affect the quality of the medal itself," the Committee added.
The organization collected small electronic devices, like phones, from all across Japan to create all 5,000 of the medals.
This makes the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games the first to involve the public in creating medals. It's also the first time the Games have manufactured medals using recycled metals.
The gold medals for the Tokyo Olympics, created by Japanese designer Junichi Kawanishi, comprise roughly 6 grams of gold atop roughly 550 grams of pure silver. It would be worth about $345 today, according to this gold valuation site.
Since gold and silver rates, like stock prices, fluctuate pretty frequently, the value of the medal isn’t exactly static.
But in general, it’s hovering somewhere above $800. A silver medal, made of 550 grams of pure silver, comes in at $462; and bronze medals, mostly copper and a little zinc, are worth just a few bucks.
