国内经常把西班牙语称为“小语种”，但它真的不小。

西语现在已经是全球第三大语言了，仅次于英语和汉语，拉丁美洲的国家大部分都讲西语。

美国也有庞大的西语人口，比西班牙本国多得多。

说起来，除开英语之外，西语应该是欧洲语言里最简单的，很容易入门，单词本身就是音标，看着就能读，复数形式甚至直接和英语一样+s。

By number of native speakers, Spanish is the second biggest language in the world (behind only Mandarin). By total speakers, it's at number three. Spanish is also the second most-common language in the United States, which is home to a whopping 40 million native speakers. This makes the U.S. the second-biggest Spanish-speaking country in the world, behind only Mexico – and it's predicted that, within our lifetimes, it'll overtake Mexico and become the largest.
按母语者的数量来算，西班牙语是全球第二大的语言（仅次于中文普通话）；按全部使用者来算，它排第三（前面是普通话和英语）。西班牙语也是美国的第二大语言，美国有4000万人的母语是西班牙语；这让美国成为全球第二大的西语国家，仅次于墨西哥——而且，美国预计会在我们有生之年超过墨西哥成为第一大西语国家。
