Some pretty cutting reviews didn't stop Venom being a hit at the box office, nor did they halt plans for a sequel.

“I can't say anything other than that it is happening,” Venom co-writer Jeff Pinkner said in an interview.

With Tom Hardy at its centre as journalist Eddie Brock, the Marvel title has been one of the highest grossing films of the year, taking more than $850 million at the box office worldwide.

In spite of his insistence that he must stay silent on the sequel, Pinkner did, in fact, go on to hint at a major new character for the next instalment.

“Without revealing anything that I'm not supposed to reveal, it is not impossible a future Venom movie Spider-Man will play a significant role,” he said.

“I think it's fair to say that everyone involved would be very excited by a Spider-Man/Venom movie.”
