Iran's grand bazaar in Tabriz is the largest of its kind in the world. The market has played an important role for traders since ancient times.

Tradition, culture, and numerous goods are all contained within the vaulted ceilings of Iran's largest covered market.

The Tabriz bazaar, located in northwestern Iran, is a thriving complex, selling everything one desires.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the ancient market was a key commercial center along the historic, ancient Silk Road connect east and west.

But even after centuries, the bazaar is still as vibrant and important as ever.

Today, Tabriz bazaar is still considered to be the capital of Iran's Persian carpet empire.

Muzafarieh Hall with it's amazing arched ceilings is famous for the production and trading of luxury carpets.

Carpet maker Ali Rahmati says he is very proud of the complex.

Ali Rahmati, Carpet Maker, Tabriz Bazaar, said, "Tabriz Bazaar is one of the largest, most beautiful with the largest covered ceiling in the world. You can't find anywhere in the world with such a great bazaar over hundreds of hectares wide without any pillars. The bazaar is connected to several major streets in Tabriz and yet covered from all sides."

For thousands of years the bazaar was the center of life in Persia and across Western Asia.

In Tabriz, the market has been a place of cultural exchange and has developed over time into a center for political, religious and commercial activities.

One of the merchants in the bazaar says he thinks Tabriz is unique.

Haj Hossein, Bazar Merchant, said, "This is an exemplary site. There is nothing like this in the world. You can ask everyone about the uniqueness of Tabriz Bazaar."

Within the bazaar there are hundreds of traditional teahouses, 22 mosques and bath houses.

The bazaar's interconnected structure and stunning arched ceilings is home to more than 5 thousand shops with tens of thousands of people working inside.

Tabriz was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in July 2010, one of 12 across Iran.

Nassser Khajei, National Heritage Sites of E. Azerbaijan, said, "Well, complex bazaar dates back to eleven hundred years ago but the time that reconstruction started to be covered as a couple back to Zandieh dynasty, almost 550 years ago. The bazaar is 1.5 kilometer length of bazaar. There are over 5500 shops. Our complex bazaar divided into five sections; jewelry bazaar, carpet bazaar, spice bazaar, shoe bazaar and general bazaar. In this bazaar there are more than 24 Karvansarai and four ancient hammams, baths."

The people of Tabriz are proud of this complex, which has stood the test of time.
