1783, British forces evacuate New York, their last military position in United States during the revolutionary war.

1999, off the Florida coast, fishermen rescue Elian Gonzalez after he survived a shipwreck of trying to reach the U.S. with his mother. An international custody battle's soon enforced between Elian's father in Cuba and the boy's Miami relatives. The following year, the U.S. government removes Elian from those relatives and returns him to his father.

And 1914, Joe DiMaggio, one of baseball's greatest hitters and center fielders is born in Martinez, California.
