Overnight snowfall has again hit north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Three towns are badly hit, with herdsmen helping each other to overcome the difficulties.

In the Xinan prefecture, about 1,500 kilometers northeast of Inner Mongolia's regional capital, Hohhot, the pasture areas are totally blanketed by snow between 30 centimeters and a meter deep.

On the way to visit herdsmen by car, police rescuers from the Horqin Right Wing Front Banner County became trapped twice. A normal ten-minute long journey took them nearly an hour.

Carrying bags of rice, flour and bean oil, they had to walk to the herdsmen's families to give them the daily necessities.

The snow is the heaviest in 30 years. At least 700 heads of livestock - herdsmen's livelihood - are believed to have died.

One sheep can be sold for more than a thousand yuan, but a dead sheep is worth less than a hundred.

The local government has earmarked 1 million yuan for disaster relief. The civil affairs department is preparing to send relief goods such as quilts to help herdsmen get through the winter storms.

Meanwhile, temperatures in northern China have fallen dramatically. The capital Beijing experienced its coldest day so far of the winter, Saturday. In Liaoning and Jilin provinces, snowfall has forced airports and highways to close.

Another cold wave is expected to hit the north of the country again on November the 30th.
