US President Barack Obama has been hurt in a basketball game, needling 12 stitches to his lip.

Obama was injured playing with his personalaide and members of his family at Fort McNair Army base in Washington D.C..

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says that "after being inadvertently hit with an opposing player's elbow in the lip while playing basketball with friends and family.

Obama was given stitches by the White House Medical Unit."
