November 10, 1970 - The Great Wall of China, previously out-of-bounds, opens for world tourism. Commercial benefits for the People's Republic are quickly realized as travelers from all over the globe flocked to see the greatest building enterprise in the history of man. Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Emperor of China linked up existing walls and built other new sections to create the Great Wall in the 3rd century B.C. Built from earth and stone as a defensive fortification against the Huns from the north, it stretches 1500 miles. Common tourist facilities such as picnic areas and restaurants accompanied the wall when it opened, along with loud speakers broadcasting Chinese opera and favorite thoughts from Chairman Mao.
