On the talk show Date with Lu Yu, chief editor of Bazaar fashion magazine Su Mang once told host Lu Yu about her attitude towards Qiu Ku, or long johns. Su Mang said she didn't wear Qiu Ku as they are unfashionable and suggested her co-workers not wear them either.

This aroused a heated debate in the public, making people reconsider the traditional cotton long underwear they had worn for years. Though many people don't agree with Su Mang, it's still a fact that more and more youngsters aren't wearing Qiu Ku these days.

"I don't wear Qiu Ku, as they are not necessary. You know, most of the time I stay in the office, or at home or in the car. All of these places are quite warm, so I can just wear leggings and boots."

"I used to wear Qiu Ku when I was a kid, but I don't wear them anymore. Qiu Ku are very baggy, if I wear them under my pants, it's very uncomfortable."

"As long as the weather is not unbearably cold, I don't wear Qiu Ku. This makes me look slimmer. I'm happy when I see myself slim."

On the other hand, lots of people have a different opinion.

"There's no doubt that it's not pretty. But winter in Beijing is too cold; I still choose to wear Qiu Ku."
"Qiu Ku is a must. I'm in my 60s and I always tell my grandchildren to wear Qiu Ku. They don't wear it for the sake of beauty, but I think keeping warm should come first."

"If you don't wear Qiu Ku, it will harm your health."

Fashion editor Su Mang said she asked her co-workers not to wear Qiu Ku since Western people don't have such clothes, and would regard them as countrified. Some people point out that Americans also have long underwear for winter. Those who don't know what long johns are mostly come from Europe, Japan or countries with warmer winters. Yoshinoya Ayane is a Japanese girl who currently works in Beijing.

"I wear long johns now, as the winter in Beijing is freezing. You know, I hate long johns but I have to wear them. But luckily, I have something to replace them. Now we can buy very thick stockings. They are tight-fitting and warm, I mean, although they are not as warm as long johns with pants, they are much better looking."

In the meantime, Yoshinoya also suggests heat wraps that can stick to clothes and above-the-knee boots. She says back in her hometown, where girls used to wear skirts and go barelegged in winter, people have begun attaching more importance to health and wear thermal underwear in recent years.

Anyway, the fashion depends on different people's taste, while health is more fundamental and basic.
